As the name suggests, Euro 6 (also known as EU6 or Euro VI) is the latest round of regulation set by the European Commission governing the amount of harmful exhaust gases motor vehicles can emit. Compared with the previous Euro 5 (also known as EU5 or Euro V) emissions standard, which focused largely on carbon dioxide emissions – the CO2 that is currently used to set road tax bands for cars in the UK (vans are taxed differently) – Euro 6 is particularly targeting nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions.
But it will also reduce sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, and diesel particulate matter emissions, as well as CO2

Reduced pollution zones such as the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and the Clean Air Zones that are being introduced in five other Cities (Birmingham, Derby, Leeds, Nottingham and Southampton) will all require that vehicles entering the zones be EURO 6 compliant in order to avoid substantial daily fees.
The current fee for non-compliant vehicles to enter the existing London LEZ is for HGVs, Buses, Coaches and most other large diesel vehicles. Many in the industry believe that this fee will rise steadily as the public demand ever greater air-quality standards.
From September 2019 with the introduction of the “Ultra Low Emission Zone – ULEZ” in London and September 2020 when the “Clean Air Zones – CAZs” will be introduced in the other cities, diesel powered buses, coaches and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) will need to meet Euro 6 exhaust emission standards to travel without charge in the zones.

This penalty is in addition to any CC or LEZ penalties received.
For cars, vans and minibuses this will be £130 (reduced to £65 if paid within 14 days). For HGVs, coaches and buses this will be £1,000 (reduced to £500 if paid within 14 days).
