The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) was introduced back in 2008 and covers most of Greater London operating 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It was introduced to encourage the most polluting heavy diesel vehicles driving in the Capital to become cleaner. Many companies who use heavy diesel vehicles to go into the city are often unaware of their liabilities and what they can do to reduce the cost of using the LEZ to their business.
The LEZ required commercial diesel powered vehicles operating within the zone to pay a daily fee unless their vehicles meet certain emission standards. When the LEZ was first introduced in 2008 operators of HGVs were required to meet Euro III standard for the emissions of particulate matter (PM). This was further tightened in 2012 to require Euro IV “PM” Emissions standards to be met in order to drive within the LEZ without charge.
The London LEZ is enforced and monitored by an extensive network of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) Cameras which interface directly with the DVLA’s database.
